Vector graphics editors or bitmap graphics editors maybe used to create images. Vector graphics editors (drawing programs) allow the composition and editing of vector images, which can be saved in a variety of vector formats, such as SVG, EPS, PDF, VML, and WMF, or in bitmapped formats. They are better for line art or line drawing, which includes logos, sharp-edged illustrations (such as cartoons and clip arts), logos, technical illustrations, and diagrams. Drawing skill is of course necessary. Popular programs used among professionals include Illustrator and CorelDraw. Popular free ones include Inkscape, and these are sufficient for beginners. Bitmap graphics editors (image editing programs) allow the painting and editing of pictures and save them as bitmap formats, such as GIF, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF. They are most suitable for retouching and manipulating photographs and creating photo-realistic images, which are typically images that are made up of many slightly different colors. The most popular of these editors among professionals is Photoshop, which has a cheaper version called Photoshop Element. Free ones include GIMP and RawTherapee. Online editors are also available. Some are listed at the end of this chapter.
